Lines & Wrinkles in Islington, London

Effective Treatments for Fine Lines, Wrinkles & Facial Lines – Understanding the Problem

Lines and wrinkles are a common concern at Refind Aesthetics. The word 'wrinkles' gets used as though it describes a single thing, but the biology behind different lines varies considerably.

Why Lines and Wrinkles Develop

Collagen and Elastin Loss

Collagen gives skin its firmness and structure; elastin allows it to spring back after movement. Both decline steadily from the mid-twenties onwards, and the skin becomes progressively less able to recover from the repeated mechanical stresses of everyday expression.

Volume Loss

The face has multiple distinct fat compartments beneath the skin that give it its youthful shape and convexity. These shrink with age and the skin above loses its scaffolding. As a result it begins to sag and fold under gravity.

Skin Dehydration and Thinning

As the skin's ability to retain moisture declines and the dermis becomes thinner, fine surface lines become more pronounced. Some of what looks like wrinkling is actually dehydration and this can be improved without any injectable treatment at all.

Repeated Muscle Contractions

Every time you smile, squint, frown, or raise your eyebrows, the underlying muscles fold the skin above them. When skin is young and collagen-rich, it springs back completely but over the years and thousands of repetitions, it begins to retain the fold.

Bone Remodelling

The facial skeleton changes across a lifetime. The underlying bony structure that supports tissue gradually recedes, amplifying the effect of fat loss and accelerating the gravitational descent of skin and soft tissue.

UV Damage

Sun exposure is the most significant external driver of skin ageing. UV radiation directly degrades collagen and elastin and is responsible for far more  'wrinkles' than most people realise.

The Three Distinct Types of Lines and Wrinkles

At Refind, the first step in any assessment is identifying which category or combination of lines is present.

The main types are:

Dynamic wrinkles

Dynamic lines appear only during facial movement and disappear when the face  relaxes. They are caused by repeated muscle contractions and are the easiest type to prevent and treat early.

Static wrinkles

Static wrinkles remain visible even when the face is at rest. They develop when repeated movement causes permanent changes within the skin, often requiring a combination of treatments.

Gravitational folds

Gravitational folds develop as facial volume is lost and tissues descend with age. They are best

Is There a Case for Treating Lines Early?

Yes. When a line is still in the dynamic phase, the skin's underlying structure is largely intact. Addressing the muscular cause at this point means the skin can recover, and lines can soften significantly with the right treatment. The results are more complete, less product is needed, and lines remain noticeably less severe even during periods when treatment has worn off.

Once a line becomes static, the situation is different. The crease now exists within the skin's structure itself. Treatment can prevent further deepening and improve the appearance, but rebuilding damaged structure requires a different and often a more involved approach than preventing damage in the first place.

There's no universal age at which to start. The right moment is when dynamic lines are consistently visible during expression and beginning to leave a faint trace on the skin for several seconds after relaxing. For many people this begins in the late twenties to mid-thirties but genetics, sun exposure history, and skin type all influence the timeline.

That said, clients with established static and gravitational lines can still achieve some improvement but this often involves a combination of treatments rather than a single intervention.

Which Areas Are Most Commonly Affected?

Forehead and Frown Lines

Driven by frontalis and corrugator muscle activity. Often the earliest lines to develop and among the most amenable to preventive treatment.

Crows Feet

Caused by the orbicularis oculi, one of the most active muscles in the face. The periorbital skin is also thinner and more vulnerable than skin elsewhere, so these lines tend to develop faster.

Nasolabial Folds

Primarily caused by mid-face volume loss and gravitational descent, compounded by repeated muscle activity. This is a natural anatomical feature that becomes more pronounced with age.

Marionette Lines

Driven by a combination of pre-jowl volume loss and the downward pull of the depressor anguli oris muscle, which can make the face read as sad or stern at rest.

Perioral Lines

Vertical lines above and below the lip caused by repeated orbicularis oris contraction and the specific structural vulnerabilities of the perioral skin.

What Can Be Done About Lines and Wrinkles?

Refind Aesthetics offers a range of non-surgical treatments for lines and wrinkles from botulinum toxin consultation for dynamic lines, to dermal fillers and collagen bio-stimulators for volume-related folds, to skin-quality injectables for structural skin deterioration.

Every treatment plan begins with a thorough skin assessment, because the right approach depends entirely on the type of lines present, their stage of development, and the individual's skin quality and goals.
