The Leeds cases are not unique or isolated. In the summer of 2025, the UKHSA recorded at least 38 cases of botulism poisoning linked to unlicensed botox-like products. Twenty-eight of those cases were in the north-east of England. On a single night in June, five victims presented to A&E in Durham and were linked to cheap fake anti-wrinkle injections.

In response to the Leeds cases, Dr Martin Bewley, consultant in health protection at the UKHSA, issued clear guidance: anyone who has recently had a cosmetic procedure and is experiencing unusual symptoms should contact NHS 111 or go to A&E immediately.

Symptoms to watch for include severe drooping of the upper eyelids, double vision, difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, and unusual lethargy.

Crucially, Dr Bewley also said that it is important to see a licensed practitioner. That single sentence carries enormous weight and implies that not everyone offering these treatments in the UK is operating within safe, regulated parameters. The Real Dangers Of Fake And Substandard Botox Products

Botulism is a form of poisoning caused by botulinum toxin acting on the nervous system in an uncontrolled way.
